Governor Phil Scott to Address Efforts to Reverse Increasing Incidence of Opioid Overdoses

Legislature to declare April 13 as Opioid Overdose Awareness Day at the State House to bring attention to the immediate and ongoing impact of substance use disorders

MONTPELIER – Governor Phil Scott will participate in a press conference with Administration officials on April 13 at 12:00 p.m. to raise awareness about the devastating impact opioid overdose deaths and substance use disorders have on Vermont families and communities. The Governor will be joined by family members of two young Vermonters who lost their lives to opioid overdose, and by legislative leaders, the Attorney General, health, public safety and law enforcement officials, as well as first responders, and substance misuse prevention and treatment professionals.

“We must continue improving our prevention, treatment and enforcement policies around substance use disorders and opioid addiction, in particular,” said Gov. Scott. “Increasing awareness about opiate abuse and removing the stigma associated with it are important measures to combatting the crisis in Vermont, and I want to thank legislators, municipalities, and community leaders for continuing to make this issue a priority.”

The press conference is part of a day of events that will include the proposal of a joint House and Senate Resolution declaring April 13, 2017 as Opioid Overdose Awareness Day. Starting at 11:00 a.m., representatives from the Howard Center will demonstrate how to use the opioid reversal drug Narcan® which will be available along with and information, resources and other materials. Representatives of the Howard Center, Vermont Recovery Network and the faith-based recovery group, Teen Challenge, will be among the organizations and individuals who will be at the State House to share their stories and information.
