About Green Mountain Secure Retirement

A 2017 law authorized the creation of the Green Mountain Secure Retirement Plan, a voluntary Multiple Employer Plan (MEP) retirement option for Vermont self-employed individuals and employers of 50 employees or fewer that do not currently offer a retirement plan to their employees.

The law provides that the plan:

  1. be easy and simple to understand;
  2. administered to maximize cost effectiveness and efficiency;
  3. easy to join;
  4. administered with trustworthy oversight;
  5. be consumer friendly;
  6. portable for employees;
  7. provide choice for individual subscribers;
  8. voluntary;
  9. help individuals improve their financial wellness;
  10. encourage adequate savings for future needs;
  11. not compete with existing private sector solutions; and
  12. utilize pretax dollars.

State Treasurer Beth Pearce is holding a public hearing as the State begins the process of developing a savings option for self-employed individuals and Vermont employers.
