Photo of the Vermont State HouseApril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. I gave the following remarks introducing advocates from the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Each year, across Vermont, advocates at our local Network Programs serve over 7,000 victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, dating violence, and stalking.

Through a 24 hour hotline, advocates provide crisis intervention, problem-solving assistance, safety planning and emotional support.

They offer information and referrals to all community resources over the phone and in person.

Advocates also offer support, advocacy and referrals related to the Relief from Abuse Order, family and criminal court processes when it’s related to domestic and sexual violence.

They accompany survivors to the hospital to offer support and advocacy when receiving medical attention following an act of sexual or domestic violence.

Advocates work in their local communities to ensure that all systems are working to protect victims and their children; they provide support groups and offer youth and community education.

Today some of the advocates of the Vermont Network program are here and I would like to offer them a warm welcome and a thank you for the hard work they do every day to support victims and survivors across Vermont.
